Covid-19 and the State of the Industry (Well, Our Little Piece of it Anyway!)

On the night of March 17th, 2020, at around 8pm, we heard that Governor Sisolak had ordered everyone in the state to shelter in place. Immediately we were on the phone, drafting letters for our customers to let them know that we were there to support and advise what their “step one” should be. We were drafting letters to officials to ensure that HVAC would be specified on the essential work list. The next day we were in corporate leadership meetings on newly formed Coronavirus response teams. We didn’t know what was next, but we wanted to be ready to respond.

The months to follow would include participation on Covid task forces at universities and clinics, working with infectious disease experts and industrial hygienists, advising facilities teams across east and west coasts, vetting strategies and technology, questioning current practices, co-authoring technical articles, refuting others, and trading stories about what news outfits our ASHRAE leadership were responding to and how.  Trying to figure out “what this thing was/is,” engineers were (and still are) constantly re-evaluating HVAC/IAQ solutions based on new and better field results, and contractors, vendors, and field-verifiers were (and still are) getting into the trenches of engineered technology and solutions. Our HVAC is just one part of the response equation, but it’s been important—increasingly more with airborne transmission in the spotlight.

Part One of this session includes a brief perspective of one corporate Covid-responder who’s collaborated with several customer task forces and professional organizations across the map. Part Two will facilitate a discussion forum to share local perspectives--our response as it has evolved and what the future holds for engineering consultants, contractors, owners, maintainers and vendors in the HVAC business in Southern Nevada.

Note: This session offers one perspective that includes examples of cross-organizational efforts in pandemic response, specifically efforts related to HVAC systems and IAQ/IEQ.  For both Parts One and Two, this session will conform to ASHRAE guidelines for anti-commercialism.   i.e., We can talk strategies, technical, and share stories and best resources, but actively will be avoiding product/manufacturer bias and/or debates!
